Hosea 8

Israel Reaps the Whirlwind

1 a Put the trumpet to your
Lit palate
lips!
cLike an eagle the enemy comes dagainst the house of the Lord,
Because they have etransgressed My covenant
And rebelled against My flaw.
2 gThey cry out to Me,
My God, hwe of Israel know You!”
3Israel has rejected the good;
The enemy will pursue him.
4 iThey have set up kings, but not by Me;
They have appointed princes, but I did not know it.
With their jsilver and gold they have made idols for themselves,
That
Lit he
they might be cut off.
5
Or Your calf has rejected you
He has rejected your mcalf, O Samaria, saying,
My anger burns against them!”
How long will they be incapable of ninnocence?
6For from Israel is even this!
A ocraftsman made it, so it is not God;
Surely the calf of Samaria will be broken to
Or splinters
pieces.
7For qthey sow the wind
And they reap the rwhirlwind.
The standing grain has no
Lit growth
heads;
It yields tno
Or meal
grain.
Should it yield, strangers would swallow it up.

8Israel is vswallowed up;
They are now among the nations
Like a wvessel in which no one delights.
9For they have gone up to xAssyria,
Like ya wild donkey all alone;
Ephraim has zhired
Lit loves
lovers.
10Even though they hire allies among the nations,
Now I will abgather them up;
And they will begin acto
Or suffer for awhile
diminish
Because of the burden of the aeking of princes.

11Since Ephraim has afmultiplied altars for sin,
They have become altars of sinning for him.
12Though agI wrote for him ten thousand precepts of My ahlaw,
They are regarded as a strange thing.
13As for My aisacrificial gifts,
They ajsacrifice the flesh and eat it,
But the Lord has taken no delight in them.
Now He will akremember their iniquity,
And alpunish them for their sins;
They will return to amEgypt.
14For Israel has anforgotten his Maker and aobuilt palaces;
And Judah has multiplied fortified cities,
But I will send a apfire on its cities that it may consume its palatial dwellings.
